Orchard 10th Ward, NSL Parkway Stake-Aug 2010 Preparedness newsletter
This is what was submitted for the month of Aug. I can post past issues if there is an interest? Also, any comments will be appreciated.
An assortment of things to cover this month.
We are now in the middle of summer. We have been fortunate so far with very few "extreme heat days". We have had a few, but nothing as serious as other parts of the country/world have had. But, being Utah, we can reat assured that more are on the way. I want you to think about what actions you have taken so far to keep yourselve and your family safe from heat injuries? Also ask yourselve what more do you need to do? While your at it, give some thought to your neighbors and friends. Have you inquired as to their well being during these hot dayz? Heat injuries tend to be very active among the infirmed and elderly. Have you done what you can to help them? And please, give some thought to the family pets. They are not happy with the heat either, and are, for the most part, unable to take the necessary precations without your help, and they especially need your help now to survive the summer.
Don't forget to use your Battery operated Emergency Weather Radio to keep you abreast of any weather alerts that may happen in your area.
On Aug 21, you will be hosting a Family Preparedness Fair at the Camelot Rec Center. There will be several vendors and displays, so "Come-on-Down" and see what you've accomplished. You are allowed to invite anyone that you think may benefit, as well as those that already know/have everything about preparedness. I know I'm learning new things almost daily. And if you have a particular talent or knowledge that would be helpful to others, please contact me, and we can get a table set up for you. Thats one of the reason we are here, to help others (anouther reason would be eating Ice Cream).
Starting in Aug we will be conducting a weekly communications exercise on Saturdays. Everyone within the Ward boundries will be allowed to participate. You do not have to be a member to check-in (so let your non-attending neighbors know). The exercise will begin at 12:00 noon each Saturday. Use your Family Radio Service (FRS) radio, set to channel 10 (no tone) and call your neighborhood co-ordinator. He will then contact me with the tally. We need to start practicing this so that accurate information can be passed during/after future events.
And speaking of communications, you have updated your Family Communications Plan, right? Your family members do know how to contact you when the phone systems goes down? Your family is aware of who your out-of-state contact is, correct? Have you let your family know where to meet when something happens? You need to pick three places to meet. One should be right outside your home, in the case of a sudden emergency, like a fire. The second needs to be a location in your neighborhood (a friends house, or "the big elm in the park, ect). And lastly, you need need to set a regional meeting place, in case you can’t return home. And did I mention that you should ask an out-of-state friend/family member to be your family's out-of-town contact. This is someone that all your family members will know to call and pass on their status and location. In many cases, after a disaster, it is often easier to call long distance due to local lines being down or busy.
So, Heat Preparedness for yourselve, your family, your pets, your friends, and your neighbors (order of importance varies).
