I've always just taken some bailing wire and rolled it up in a coil, with a strand from a cotton mop up through the center of it. Then on the other end, made a longer handle that came up over the edge of the glass container. Then use rancid (or good) cooking oil of any kind in that container. It burns for hours and hours and only costs a few cents to make, other than the container.
For the container, I like using a little smaller bottles than full sized mason jars.
And if you put a mirror or reflective surface behind the light, it makes a huge difference.
