Thread: For all of us AR-15 fanboys (and girls)

  1. For all of us AR-15 fanboys (and girls)

Here is a very interesting and well written article that debunks a few myths about the Evil Black Rifle.

    Enjoy and discus.

Finally. a voice of reason in a sea of myth and rumor.

The more i learn about the AR15 the more i love it.

I am thinking of making it official and taking a certified armors course.

Thanks that was very interesting. It seems that he was saying that with a little bit heavier buffer weight, it helps with the reliability of the gun. The only time it became a liability was when the bolt/carrier was so fouled that the friction was too much and the gun stopped working. Then it resumed working with just a little lube.

I dont plan on shooting that many rounds with little or no lube, but I think having a heavier buffer is something I would like to try.

I am also becoming a huge fan of the AR. It is fun to learn and then implement that knowledge in the betterment of my AR and the ones I help build.

    A note about heavier buffers..

You need to use full power ammo with the heavier buffers. Wolf et all may not properly cycle a gun with an H3 buffer...

Heavy buffers do not, IMHO, increase reliability in fouled circumstances - if anything they probably make it a little worse if nothing else has changed. You notice he got a few more rounds through with a lighter buffer. Perhaps a heavy buffer with a stronger spring may make a difference, I'm not sure how a stronger spring plays into it...

Heavy buffers do slow down your cycle rate a little, more mass to move and all. Lower slide velocities are suppose to help your bolts and other parts last a bit longer. It will also spread the felt recoil over a longer period of time, making it a little less sharp (not that AR recoil is bad or anything..). Some people take the opposite approach, less mass (there are special light weight BCG and buffer combos) to minimize the time spent in recoil, which can help keep 2nd shot on a rapid double tap closer...

General rule of thumb I understand is to use the heaviest buffer that will cycle your ammo reliably in a go-to duty gun. If you ever anticipate running into a mag full of wolf, you may want to stick to the Carbine/H buffer weights.

Having a few spare recoil springs are a good idea, the do wear out.
