Tons of great info on this site! You can make a solar cooker out of just a cardboard box, some foil, and some black paint. Try some of these out, impress your friends, and feel like McGyver.

Friends and neighbors have used Steve Jones plans as referenced in the article. The cookers work very well. Of course they aren't as sturdy as a commercial solar cooker and wind is an issue, but the cookers can certainly help in a short term situation and given the minimal cost of construction, the cooker is an excellent 'try before you buy' option before you buy a commercial unit.
