Thread: What Are You Planting This Year?

  1. What Are You Planting This Year?

Share what you are planting in your garden this year and also some pictures of this year's and previous year's gardens. We'd love to hear from you and get some new ideas!

I'm pretty sure my cherry tomatoes will volunteer one more year. Also, I am starting beefsteak tomatoes, broccoli, brussel's sprouts (per my kids' request), peppers, and basil. I will be planting spinach, zucchini, yellow crookneck, pumpkin (small sugar), butternut squash, and melon later.

  4. Re: What Are You Planting This Year?

I live in Memphis and am able to plant three crops a year, plus the fruit trees.

The early spring garden (most of which is already planted) includes:

Romaine lettuce, buttercrunch lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, strawberries, onion and garlic.

The summer garden (which I am just beginning to plant -- under row covers until the danger of frost has passed, of course) will include:

Several varieties of slicing tomatoes, Roma and Royal Chico canning tomatoes, Yellow Pear snacking tomato (a little yellow tomato that you eat like almost like candy), several varieties of sweet bell peppers, several varieties of southern peas, green "string" beans, purple "string" beans (purple string beans are cooked just like green string beans, and even turn green when they are boiled), lima beans, yellow summer squash, zucchini, eggplant, potatoes, carrots, sweet basil, watermelon, and maybe corn. I have grown corn in past years, but I'm not sure I want to mess with it this year.

    The fall garden will include:

Romaine and buttercrunch lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, and maybe turnip greens.

    Fruits that I grow include:

Peaches, plums, nectarines, strawberries, red raspberries and (in the future) blueberries. I just bought the blueberry plants and haven't even put them in the ground yet, so it will be a few years before I have a blueberry crop.

We have a dozen varieties of tomatoes started and are planting peas, carrots, green beans, lima beans, Japanese climbing cukes (pickling), beets, sweet peppers, hot peppers, onions, sunflowers, potatoes, kohlrabi, carrots, Chinese spinach, pak choi, six lettuce varieties, chard, zucchini, New Zealand spinach and herbs. Added to our apple and pear orchard are plums, gooseberries, blackberries, raspberries, grapes, rhubarb, horseradish, garlic and a separate herb garden.
