Thread: Fuel from the Airport

  1. Fuel from the Airport

This is a post about "alternative fuels". In a situation of civil unrest, it's safe to assume that air traffic will be grounded for good. If you are having a hard time finding fuel here are a couple alternatives that you could find at your local airport:

    - Jet fuel is, for all intents and purposes, dyed diesel fuel. You can run it straight up in any diesel motor without ill effects.

    - 100LowLead (AvGas) AvGas is a high octane, leaded fuel, so it is not recommended for use in newer fuel injected vehicles, but the older carb engines will drink it pretty well. I've run this in a 1976 VW Beetle (carb, not FI) without any problems! In fact, it seemed to run just a smidgen better because of the lead content.

You should be very careful about using AvGas in certain small engines (lawn mowers, log splitters...) as some were made with valves made from low grade steel and can be damaged. You should be able to Google this information to see if any of your small engines would be compromised.

    Hope this helps!

Jet fuel could also be called "highly refined kerosene". It runs very well in kero lamps and heaters. However, I don't think there is dye in jet fuel ... the red dye is to identify which fuel has a tax paid on it or something like that.

Also, I did some calling at the local airport here in Chandler AZ and they said they'd be happy to sell me the jet fuel. They'll pull the fueling truck around and fill up whatever tanks I have.
