One thing we do is to have a "food storage thought of the week" on our Sunday announcements handed out every Sunday morning. It has an idea or item in it for something positive to accomplish that week.
We've had food storage guidelines printed in our Relief Society bulletin also. One year they did suggested purchases for the week or month to add to your food storage. On the ward announcements/program might be better since they go to the whole ward though.![]()
Crazy preparedness lady. Food Storage and Survival
I write a page long monthly article for the ward newsletter. During the month, I send emergency preparedness emails to the members who want to receive them. Individuals with Emergency Preparedness responsibilities in each ward organization coordinate with me so the ward is working on the same focus from month to month.
We are spending a lot of time and print space this year teaching folks how to grow a successful garden. That effort will continue with harvesting, canning and storing in the procession of the seasons. The newsletter articles will support these activities and any other related topics and news announcements.
Our ward is really trying to focus on preparedness this year. As preparedness specialist, I have a page in our ward newsletter, but we wanted the information to be on their minds more than when the ward newsletter came out. I am creating a full 4 page preparedness newsletter that will rehash what's in the ward newsletter plus more to hand out mid-month. I get a quick minute in RS every week to give reminders and inspirational preparedness quotes. I also do a 15 minute spotlight on a preparedness skill each month at the evening RS meeting. Each months newsletter includes 2 recipes (1 cooked recipe and 1 no-cook) along with an ingredients chart listing how much is needed for 1 meal, 6 months of meals, and 1year of meals.
In a lesson manual, I fould a self-reliance chart illustrating the 6 areas of self-reliance and am using that as a guide for topics to put in the newsletter. I'd love to hear more about what others are doing or what they would like to do/see in a newsletter.

Please share the details and maybe even copies of your newsletters if you don't mind. You can upload the letters themselves in the downloads section or just copy and paste the information in the appropriate areas within a post. I'm sure that others would be very grateful and hopefully share some of their thoughts to give you more ideas as well!
