    What is a Borshart (SP)

  6. Re: New guy, little bio......

The only thing i can think of even coming close to that phonetically is a "Borchardt" which is an antique military handgun from slighgtly before/around the WW1 era.

  7. Re: New guy, little bio......

    Welcome!
You sound interesting. quite a varied background.
    I'm singl too!

  8. Re: New guy, little bio......

So kissy7, I'm interested in asking you something.......

Most LDS who prep do it for family reasons, What do you find is the most difficult for a single prepper?

I find it's finding storage foods in amounts calculated for 1 person, most "food kits" are calculated for caloric intake for 4 people for x amount of time. Even the canning programs etc. you see for figuring out amount of food you preserve yourself.

Now i won't be alone, my elderly parents, my older brother and his wife and child and my brothers MIL all plan to shelter together, maybe my sister and her family and my younger brother and his family if my sister and hers can make it to our town from Iowa and my younger brother isn't deployed by the Army when the poo impacts the air propulsion mechanism.

I also find others , especially women i have dated, think i'm a loner nutcase because i have guns and prep, the possible relationship ends there, i'm no tough guy with commando fantasies, i just like firearms and believe in being prepared for ANYTHING i forsee happening. I'm really a Teddy bear type, big jolly John Goodman type guy who won't harm anyone who isn't hurting me or those around me.

Do you find the same attitude from folks who find out you prep?

  9. Re: New guy, little bio......

Gearjammer: since I have an adequate 2 year supply, I store the long term supplies for just that. Long term. I do rotate out the shorter term stuff before the epiration date.
I only have one sister & BIL that live in my city-six blocks away- I'm sure she will be somewhat dependant on me for supplies. The rest o my famly live 1.5 hours away & not sure if meet up is feasible.
As far as weapons I only have access to a Glock .45 courtesy of my son. I wish I could have a bigger arsenol of weapons but it is too expensive. A long range riflle would be nice.
Few know I prep. my home teacher & bishop are aware; hence my calling. I talk to few friends about prepping as I find them uninterested or think I have a doomsday attitude. When I mention being prepped with a 72/96 hr kit they tell me I have been believing too much in govt propaganda. So I just dont discuss it unless I'm with like minded ppl.
As far as the actual amounts I store, I believe the dehydrated stuff will last a long time once opened. I dont buy food kits; I prefer to cook. Also, I dont mind eating leftovers. LOL

I would be really impressed with a guy that preps. I'm glad you do.

I love your comment,"poo impacts the air propulsion mechanism." It rocks!

  10. Re: New guy, little bio......

A Glock .45 is nothing to sneeze at, i had one and could hit a police outline target at 75 yards no problem.

Now the rifle, yes most commercial guns are expensive and being from Illinois your choices are limited on Semi Auto rifles........

Howwever, Moisin- Nagant(pronounced MO-sin, NAYGON} sells for as little as $70 bucks and the military surplus ammo you can get hundreds of milsurp rounds for a couple hundred bucks!!

The ammo will be corrosive primed however and you'd need to clean the bore with hot soapy water or amonia window cleaner to neutralize the corrosive salts before cleaning with regular gun cleaner such as hoppes.

  11. Re: New guy, little bio......

Thanks for the info re: rifles.
Yes, I know that IL sucks when it comes to gun ownership & carry & conceal.
We have Chicago gangs & mafia to "control." Someday it will be only the cops & bad guys that will be armed. The regular folk will have no way to protect themselves. Thats IL for ya!
I will look into a Moisin-Nagant. Cheap ammo too!
I hope I answered your questions concerning food storage & my responses to idle inquiry/discussions.

I am still impressed that a single man preps as you do! Store what you eat-eat what you store. Keep up the good work.

  12. Re: New guy, little bio......

Well kissy7, I prepare because i feel and have always felt my entire life, that when the hard times the church has us preparing for come the Saints are going to need people who know what they are doing to protect and train other members to protect the members of the church from evil folks who seek to harm us and destroy us. The great adversary is not going to allow the church to go on about it's mission unopposed when he seeks to enslave mankind in the last days, he will send his minions out to try to destroy the church by trying to kill it's members.

In fact on secular survival sites posters there have said as much, that they intend to come after LDS folks and just take our supplies by force, i hope nobody really thinks they are going to let said LDS live if they try to resist!!! Although i'll admit there is a idiot in my branch who has all his preps but won't own a gun and states "I really can't see myself shooting anybody, if my supplies get stolen the lord will take care of me because i was obedient!" To which i replied "Then on behalf of your neighbors, they asked me to request for you stock up on more of the foods they like! I'm sure your right about the lord taking care of you after all he was just joking when he said he only helps those who help themselves!! "

This naive pertson was 1st counselor to our branch president!!!!

  13. Re: New guy, little bio......

Gearjammer: My research has supported that same attitude. Only 4% of the Saints have a full years supply! YIKES! Only 25% have a 3 month store. That tells me that ppl are simply disbelieving the teaching of the church. When I hear testimonies & hear that ppl have strong convictions of the church teachings; I wonder if they have any sort of storage at all. Are they floating their testimonies on someone elses' testimony or do they think that this particular commandent doesnt apply to them. It is painful to see the turnout of saints at preparedness fairs & at my 4 week classes on food storage & preparation. Every day I do something to enhance my food supplies & cook with my supplies.
"Wheat is for man..." That means we may have to subsist on wheat for a period of time. Wheat is easy to use & stores virtually forever. But, how many know what to do with it? Do the folks have wheat grinders-both electric & manual? Crunching wheat berries would get old fast. I frequently hear how expensive grinders are. Today I had cherry walnut bread made from whole wheat. Splendid! If others knew how to utilize their stores the better they could live; & on less money.
I agree that the Saints should be armed. Well armed! Are we too stand in front of the raiders unarmed & expect the Lord to save our lives? I think not.
Haun's mill taught that following the "least" commandent brings death & total destruction. They chose to stay thinking they would be protected from the marauders. It did'nt take long for them to be totally destroyed.
We can only be prepared to do all we can. But what sacrifices do we choose to make so we can be prepared? Sacrifice is painful; as it should bel. Each time we attend the temple we commit to sacrifice our all for the good of the church. How many "toys" can we live without to be prepared? Fancy cars, boats, huge family homes & cabins in Wisconsin, will not keep us prepared. They only strap us with more burdens by choice.
My choice to live a simple life is my own. It is a commandent from the Lord. I CHOOSE to live the commandent. Everyone has agency. We will be judged by how we use that agency. I hope the counselor in your branch presidency has a full understanding of agency! He has made his choice & it may lead to his demise.

I will choose to defend myself & loved ones in any way I can. My family & food storage are precious to me. I have worked hard for THEM.
My choices have been great blessings to me.

I choose to live the commandent!
