Thread: Who's Got A Metal Roof?

  1. Who's Got A Metal Roof?

Recent storms took some shingles off the house and I want to replace with a metal roof (planning on rainwater harvesting!) I'd like to hear any thoughts on them, anything about them, from anyone that has experience with them. I'd appreciate any & all replies! Thanks!

I have installed many metal roofs, they are a good way to go for a lot of reasons. A metal roof is fairly easy to install, but installation must be done correctly. I like the SL-16 or standing seam style the best. They can be slick to walk on if you need to get on the roof especially if your roof has a steep pitch.

have one here and we love it we got it in a cream color so its light colored to reflex heat. There was a special tax discount because it was more energy effecient because of the color. There are different gauge metals as well. We got the in-between there was a light, medium and heavy. The heavy might not be able to be put on a regular roof due to the weight. Its mostly used for commercial buildings. Your house roof may not be structurally built to hold that much weight.
The lighter weight wasn't as good of a warranty due to it couldn't handle people walking on it or hail storms as it will probably dent.
The medium weight or gauge was what we went with I believe it was 22 gauge but don't quote me on that.
we love it and have noticed our electric bill has been less since the light color reflects much of the heat away.

Thanks pixel! I got the roof put on and we're happy with it. Now I've got to get a rainwater harvesting system figured out. I had a choice between 26 and 29 gauge and went with the heavier (26.) The 5-man crew with a big telescoping forklift really struggled to get the job done in 100+ degree weather. I can't believe that I considered doing it myself (for about 3 nanoseconds!)
