Thread: Deer Fencing

  1. Deer Fencing

Does anybody have any ideas on how to keep deer fenced out of a new garden spot? This place is covered up with deer. Please don say just shoot them. I don't have any room in 2 freezers now, and I view them as "preps on the hoof!" LOL The new garden is 100' x 30' and I know I'm wasting time & money to plant anything until I get it fenced. Those devils raided my raised beds in the front yard last year with 3 dogs around. They played tag-team relay with the dogs and won! LOL I need a 7' fence to do the job. I've thought & thought on the subject and the only thing I can come up with costs way too much money. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I'm no expert in this area, but I've heard a double fence works. If you have one fence, then a slightly higher fence just a couple feed behind the first one, they won't jump it because they don't like the 2 fence concept (confuses them or something). I've only read about this and some have said it works good... might look into this and see what you can find. And I don't think you need expensive fencing for this either. Let us know what you end up doing. Good luck.

Thanks! That's the first time I've heard of the double-fence approach. It kinda makes sense to me, looking at it from the deer's perspective. "That's a 2-hopper problem there, and I don't have room to land between the fences to gather for the 2nd hop!" LOL

Thanks everybody for the input. Finally just went and bought some 8' t-post, roll of web fence and will start fencing Monday. The initial fence will be about 6'9'' high, and a 2nd fence of 2 strands of hot wire around that, set back 3'. If that doesn't keep the white-tailed rats out of the garden, then I will add to the top an overhang of a strand of wire/cord with something that dangles & rattles hanging off it. The garden is located in a pasture near the house, siphon watered out of a spring-fed pond, and will have cattle in there when they rotate pastures. After this garden gets to working the way I want it to, I'll put in a 2nd garden on the next terrace down on that hillside, to be watered the same way. Got lot'sa plans!
