While serving a mission I had a cobbler remove the ineffectual soles of my American bought Bostonians and replace them with a durable boot sole. Ironically, they didn't see much use until I got home simply because I used other, cheaper shoes.

I recommend this conversion if you haven't succeeded in finding a pair of dress shoes/boots with good tread. With these I can easily avoid slipping in icy church parking lots, assist elderly church members to their vehicles, or perform last minute snow removal from church side walks and stairs. Now, of course I have my Carhartt coveralls and mud boots in my truck box for more extreme circumstances, but it doesn't always make sense to change footwear. Nor does it make sense to wear shoes with no gripping capability.

Interesting idea. How much does something like that cost?

In the States? I have no idea. You should probably just find a dress-y pair of boots.

My husband had his shoes re-soled in the states (Oregon to be specific) for a mere $25.00. They weren't boot soles because we hadn't read your article yet but I have no doubt he could have done that had we asked, for not much more. Thanks for the idea, its great!

Your feet are your most basic and reliable form of trasportation. Great care should be taken when selecting shoes and sock that your wear everyday because that's what you'll be wearing when you'll put your emergency preparedness to the test.
