I recently read on another board about a chimney fire. The baking soda routine saved the day in that instance. He was advised by experts to purchase chimney brushes and rods to clean out the creosote annually. I used a down-home method that worked fine for us for years with no problems. Every fall I would go up on the roof and let down a long logging chain into the chimney. By letting it rub against the sides, all the way around the inside diameter, and using an up & down motion, it would knock the creosote off the inside of the chimney. Try it. You'll see that it works when you have to clean up all that black junk that falls out!:D
