Okay, so what if you're not called as a Ward/Stake preparedness specialist, but still want to encourage preparedness? What if you're in Young Women? Relief Society? Scouts? Primary? Elder's Quorum? Etc. Share any ideas for teaching preparedness outside of being the preparedness specialist.

I'm in YW right now, and of course we do girls camp where the girls learn basic outdoor skills, cooking over a fire, lighting a fire, basic first aid, and the correct way to make smores.

We've also done mutual activities making soap, making lip balm, and dipping candles. We shot archery, and invited the dads and shot .22 rifles.

For Relief Society you could have a preparedness group meeting every month or however often like a book club. Learn a skill, go home and practice it, come back and report and learn something else.

I also organized a shooting night for the Relief Society a couple of years ago. Invited our local NRA instructor and he talked about gun safety and answered questions, then we went out to the hill outside of town and shot at some targets on boxes with 22 rifles. Some of the ladies had never shot before, so that was lots of fun.

Any ideas for spreading preparedness in other callings? Those with the Emergency Prep callings could also share these ideas with their ward and stake auxiliaries.

I love the idea for the r.s. to learn about guns, gun safety, and shooting! I'm going to have to use that idea. There are plenty of men who use guns in my ward to do a class. Thanks

More for Youth: We also do a combined activity with the Young Men and Young Women about 3 times a year where we take orders from the ward and go to the cannery, do the canning, then deliver the food. It is usually a long night, but much appreciated by those older folks and the ones with small children and anybody else who finds it difficult to get to the cannery themselves. Always get a good response. Our cannery likes to get the orders the day before so they have time to prep the boxes and goods a little bit. The members are asked to send a check without the amount filled in with their order in case there are price changes or they are out of stock on some items then the member is charged the correct amount once their order is complete and one of us leaders fills out the checks as the orders are rung up.

Ward Newsletter/Sunday bulletin people--Hey, you don't have to wait until a prep specialist tells you to put something preparedness related in the newsletter--YOU are the editor! Add preparedness quotes, ideas, etc to the bulletin every week. :)
