It has been suggested that having a permanent thread for New Members to check in, say hi and introduce themselves.

Drop us a line and tell us a little about yourself.

Also, please tell us how you found us!

I must of got lost, I must of got... oh wait, never mind, that's not how I got here, that's an old J. Geils song.
I remember now, you sent me an email and told me about this place. ;)

The wife, myself, and our 2 sons are converts to the Church (from about 4+ years ago). No one else from either of our families are members, but we're working on 'em.
We consider ourselves pretty well prepared (spiritually and temporally)... but there's always more work to be done.
That's why I'm here.

I am one of the most unprepared persons on the the planet and have come looking for further light and knowlege.

Oh, you wanted "my" history. hmmmmm, okay I live, eat, sleep, and breathe preparedness and watch my wife roll her eyes at me with every new preparedness gimick I have learned or heard about. Sorry, I just have to try everything. That is how I can speak with somewhat of a knowledge when people tell me about things that work and I tell them they are right or up in the night and have no clue what they are talking about.

My best qualifications for preparedness teaching and such is what I call life. I am one of the few people that is still alive that you can find in Webster's Dictionary and if you look under "accident" and "accident prone" you will most likely see my name and maybe my picture. Birth was the highlight of my life and it has gone downhill since then. I decided very young in life that if I were to survive this life I needed to know something about emergency preparedness. So at the young age of 12 I took the first aid meritbadge in scouts and by 13 I was teaching CPR for the Red Cross. I have many other trainings and specialties in the preparedness realm under my belt which includes 16 years as a nuclear, biological and chemical warfare and weaponry specialist/team leader. I pray I will never have to disable nuclear weapons again and can live out my life making doll houses and toy wooden trains for my (soon to be) granddaughters and grandsons however the reality of the very uncertain future has hit very close to home for me and I am constantly activily engaged in trying to become a profitable servant to those in need.

I was raised in Africa -- no running water, no clean water -- had to filter, no electricity (later Dad bought a generator ), kerosene refrig, vault toilet in an out house, cooked on a wood stove, we took 2 years worth of food with us when we went supplementing with hunted wild animals, wild fruit and a garden. To us that was just the way you lived.

Flash forward to age 21 when I joined the Church. Food storage did not seem at all bizarre as we had been doing that for years.

Flash forward to having children. I just knew that I was to store every needful thing, including lots of schoolbooks and pencils and paper.

Flash forward to moving to Utah from California. I was amazed that homes had such lovely food storage rooms and that most of them belonging to my friends were junk catchers or empty.

Flash forward to getting CERT trained, setting up CERT classes in my town with a fellow named Kenneth Moravec, then a few years later he invited me to go to a meeting in Orem by a fellow named Roger Young.

And here I am -- unprepared but sincerely trying to do the Lord's will.

i am Joe. I was born in East Los Angeles. really, i was. lol. We lived between 2 gangs. I was blessed to see the other side and live it for my growing up years. You live in the midst of Hell, you yearn for heaven. The thing my mom taught me was an undeniable faith in Christ. From the age of 7, I believed that the second coming was just a year or 2 away. I would scare my cub scout leader by asking her if she would be our teacher when the second coming was here. When i was 13, i saw "red dawn' for the first time, and knew that that would probably happen to us, and that we needed to prepare. So here we are, still preparing...losing eveything worldly and then preparing again.

Hey all, I'm chef Stephanie Petersen. I've been an avid food storage nut for years and teach a lot of classes in Arizona. I was a pastry chef and banquet chef but have lived as a full time mother and business owner for the last 10 years. I love this forum and am so excited to have been invited to participate. I've been canning and preserving as well as cooking with food storage most of my life so I hope I can be a good resource for anyone with questions. Feel free to drop me a note. As a memeber of the church I've been taught from the time I was small to prepare, but didn't really take it personally until we had our first baby. Somehow the thought of him ever going hungry if I could prevent it kept me motivated. Hooray for that. We've had to rely on our year's supply several times to make it through some tough times and I have a strong testimony of the importance of not only preparing for the future. God bless you all.

Why does this NOT surprise me?

My name is Karin Terry and I was born and raised on the beach (well, the backyard was full of sand) in San Diego. I joined the Church just out of high school, went to Utah State and met my husband. I have four kids, one dog, and 35 chickens.

I have been the Food Storage/Preparedness person in my Ward since 2002 - so hopefully these forums will help be perfect my calling. Obviously, since I've had it now for 7.5 years I should be getting the hang of it. My husband is even more on board with obtaining every thing plus for the time to come.

I figure life is for the ride, as long as we're riding down the right side, and I'm here to enjoy it.

I am so ready to learn and share!

I received the e-mail and signed up.

I'm a young father of 2 and do what I can to keep to the straight and narrow. With dark clouds brewing in the distance, it seems a lot of that is preparing for what is to come.

Sooooo.....you want me to introduce myself....do ya!?!?
.....alrighty, here ya go.....AH FOOEY....the smileys aint a workin here!!!!!! :P

My name is smiley and I'm addicted to preparedness!!

hahahaha....alrighty..
I come from heaven and was brought here to earth to a wonderful family! For years I had only been taught the surface of things for that is only what was taught...I guess...it took me 34 years about, to come to know of the importance of PREPAREDNESS. Between my dear sister and my Father above, they have helped me in the process of it all.

When I started in this world of preparedness, I started on getting the food, then as time passed I started slowly obtaining things outside the food world. I was working as a vet tech and found that the desires to stock up on "first aid" and other medical materials was something of importance...haha, now I know why! I continue to work towards obtaining what is needed and desired to have for what may lie ahead.

Since I have and am still obtaining the knowledge of preparing I have tried to stick it out and obtain all I could about it and then some. Sometimes it is hard and feel like I am not getting anywheres...BUT...in time all will be well and I will make it!

Sooo....I come in peace and am here for further enlightenment as my knowledge expands into new horizons.

I'm a preparedness nut. Buckets make me happy. Full buckets make me happier. Using the stuff in the buckets to make food my kids will actually eat is crazy happiness. If there's some preparedness skill to learn, I'm signing up and dragging a friend along with me. If someone says something is a certain way, I'm going to test it out and see if it's that way for me too. Still have a lot on my list to learn, so I just keep working away at it. I'm not a certified anything, but I've got over 10 years experience prepping with our little family. Hope to be able to contribute where I can and learn a bunch here also :)

Hi ya'll fellow weirdos........just another weirdo here heavy with preparedness stuff looking for more. I exist mostly in southern Utah county but make the rounds to most of the western U.S. on and off. I'm a boob about having to suffer much before I have to but be not mistaken I am ready for the worst when it comes this way. Riding the tails of a recent divorce that had me encumbered beyond belief I am now free to spread my preparedness wings and do the Lord's will even more. All I do is eat, sleep, and breathe preparedness and learning and quest for more knowledge, so bring me what you've got!!! :-) :0)

Hello to all, Just trying my hand at this new site. It will take me awhile to find my way through all this stuff. Living in happy valley close to BYU. I drive long haul. I have been getting lots of stuff, to be ready for what ever might come our way. Have a semi trailor, 48', and trying to turn it into the hotel on wheels with all prepredness stuff. I spend 90% of my time living in my semi truck. I have to look for showers and places to go, if you know what I mean.

Okay, it took me forever to learn how to navigate another preparedness site, and now I am going to try to learn this one....

I grew up with parents into preparedness, and in my married life, I have always had food storage. Then a little over a year ago, someone introduced me to some books by the author Roger K. Young. It has all gone down hill from there!! Ha Ha Ha

I am a married, stay at home mom with 5 children. For the past year, I have been trying to change my priorities and increase not only my physical preparedness, but my spiritual preparedness also. I'll let you all know if I ever reach my goals in those two areas!

Brief?

Hi! :)

More Details?

Moravec e-mailed me about this site.

Born & raised Irish Catholic; converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints upon hearing the missionary discussions about a week after my 18th birthday - which was many, many, many moons ago! Have been looking forward to the Savior's return since I was about 15/16, and been doing my best to prepare spiritually and temporally. I love the out of doors (as if my nick name didn't give that away already) and spend as much time camping and river running as I possibly can. Back when my knees were younger, I used to really enjoy backpacking also. *sigh* Happily, camping goes well with preparedness! I get to actually TEST the stuff I think I might NEED to use someday. :D

Wow another preparedness site.....now I can spend the other half of my day here!!

Joined the church when I was 16. Firmly believed in over population at that time. I decided to do my part in over populating the planet and had 12 kids. Still married to the same man after all these years and down to our last 2 at home. (Heather, 2 posts above this one is our oldest) We are planning a campout Tent wedding for our youngest who is 15. She's not too thrilled with the idea.....I think it would be great....especially in a Big White Tent! I have made sure all the married kids can't move back home by filling up the extra bedrooms with food....sneaky huh? We live in a little desert Az town where we have raised our children. We have 16 grands so far with 2 on the way. Our married kids all have their year's supply + and other preps too. It is such a blessing to have most of our kids on board with preparing for our Savior's return. We have a couple single sons who we pray for a change of heart. Hope to meet you all through the written word soon. Peggy

I'm a "less active Avow" member. I don't often post a lot of information, but I love to learn. I often research things of random interest. Like a while ago I stumbled upon a mention of a book that contains a translation of an ancient "metal book" from the Assyrian empire (I think it was the Assyrians, a rather interesting subject). It talks about 6 periods of creation and then deity worship as an example. Thank god for the holy ghost. I wouldn't be able to research anything with the filth of falsehoods out there without him. So I kinda have to stay close to father and stay good.

I have a pretty good relationship with father. Well better then my moral one anyways. I mean he's a pretty cool guy and all. He's shown me some cool things and trusts me to an extent. Heh, that's one subject I'm always open about.

I love to write! It's the one thing I can do that all my experiences and knowledge can improve! I currently work for a few online comic projects and have several stories that may turn into a book sometime. I prefer to write science fiction but my audience seems to prefer fantasy. Mind you the only difference is science fiction explains things, even if they have to make up words to do it. Fantasy just says "magic", or worse and tells you just to accept it. Besides those, I also write philosophy, it's fun to write as I seem to have a radical view on things.

As for preparedness, I feel driven to it. I mean besides liking to write about post apocalyptic stories. It's. Just. Cool. Not many can say they enjoy winter camping, cooking with solar ovens right? Well to each their own.

So yea, HI!

I didn't see this thread before, so I guess it's our turn.

My DH has been in to preparedness (just food) since he joined the Church in '80. I was raised in the Church but not taught preparedness at all. I always wanted to, but didn't until I got divorced 6 1/2 yrs ago. After DH and I got married 5 yrs ago, we became fully food prepared, but didn't think about the rest...until we read Roger K. Young's Dreams and Visions book. DH had read all of his books before that. Dreams and Visions touch us deeply. It really rang true. We prayed about it and was told that what we have read was true, and that we had better get moving, time was quickly running out. Since that wonderful day, almost three years ago, we have been preparing "Every Needful Thing" as fast as we can. Preparedness is our life and our hobby. We love to learn new things, especially learning things that will help in this area. We belong to several preparedness related groups. We are always talking about preps in one form or another. We warn/teach others as often as we can.

Thanks for the invite. We are excited to be here.

I am a SAHM of four who loves preparedness. I love to read, write, and learn new skills. I am the CERT Incident Commander for the small city in Utah County where I live. I am actively working to increase my preparedness skills and stash. I am excited to be a part of the group and learn as much as I can.

Known to some as wyosummit, I am now simply Angelina.

I am also known for Angelina's Annals (with some variations on pronunciation, depending on who you talk to...) so I'll relegate my wordy introduction to the realm of the bloviating blogosphere where I can ramble at leisure and the chit chat won't be deleted (--ribbing you, AZ Prepper). :)

I am delighted to respond to the invitation from fiveseven to join this site, and encourage you to read everything he posts: he is a man who walks the talk. He can and regularly does go into the woods for a week with just a knife and survives relatively comfortably. He knows this stuff (he would choose another word but I'll keep it G rated), he lives this stuff, he IS this stuff. He's an invaluable resource for this site and to say I'm thrilled to learn as much as I can from him, and others of his level of expertise, is an understatement.

Meanwhile, for the rest of us: I know each of you have amazing experiences and insights to share that are, as in my world, well... just slightly less exciting than surviving in the wilderness for a week with just a knife, but I'm eager to learn from all of you. Many of you have already affected my life for good, and I'm so grateful, and anticipate more blessings from those of you whom I will get to know.

Finally, most of what I can contribute to this site is a lot of "thanks" and more chit chat, so I'm going to enjoy the show with some popcorn and dive in to listening much more than I talk (believe it)-- and thereby learning all I can from each of you.

For those of you who know me and DON'T believe it-- hop on over to my blog. :)

Hi everyone! :)

I'm Deanna and I am pahka's wife and so grateful for his faith and dedication to the Lord. He told me about this site after he joined.

We are the blessed parents of three awesome kids - 2 boys and 1 girl. I am grateful to be at home with them and be their teacher too! It is a challenge, but it was an easy decision for me to make. We both have been members all our lives. My grandma was a member of the DUP (Daughters of the Utah Pioneers). I am grateful and proud of that ancestry and hope that they will be my guide as needed. I aspire to live with their level of faith, trust in the Lord, obedience and dedication. I grew up in SLC, graduated from BYU, served a mission to Osorno, Chile. I'm a licensed cosmotologist (that means I can cut your hair) :) and I have sung in several choirs throughout my life - LOVE music and LOVE to share my testimony of the Savior through music. I love all of the beauty that this earth has to offer - truly, all things denote there is a God!

It wasn't until the Spring of 2006 that we really woke up and saw what was coming and realized that we needed to shift our priorities. My SIL is the one responsible for "awakening us to our awful situation" and introduced us to Roger K. Young's books. It was a wake up call. All of a sudden I didn't care so much about aesthetics in my home and now I have white buckets and boxes lining the walls of my kitchen, bedroom, under the bed, under the window, in the closet...just about everywhere. The excuse "We don't have room" was thrown out the window and we decided we had to make room - we sold a beautiful china cabinet, china and other items to make room for our food storage. I am grateful for answered prayers that give me the courage to follow the path before us now.

Anyway....we have made great progress but are having to move much slower now due to economic conditions. So, my focus is on learning and educating myself as much as I can. Has anyone found the time tree yet? :) I'm sure it is right next to the money tree! We could really use some of both!

Glad to be here and anxious to learn and share what I can. :)

Hi, everyone!
I was referred to this site by a friend who is on AV...another preparedness site. He said this site was more spiritually based, and less panic driven than the one he frequented. I'm a lifelong member of the church. Married for 15 years, and counting, with 5 sons (ages 2-11).

I was raised in Southern California, as was my wife. I was never into scouting, but became a police officer in 1994, which started my, "be prepared for everything", attitude. My wife was the canning specialist in our ward, and has developed some great skills. She teaches me something new all the time. Our current storage hobby is creating meals from our storage that the kids will enjoy, not just tolerate :)

I medically retired from law enforcement 6 years ago, and we are currently living in the last bastion of freedom, North Idaho. We love it here, and plan on staying until we are directed otherwise by the Spirit.

My interests, other than church activity, include reading, golf, and just being outdoors. I am really interested in beefing up non-food preparedness items.

I look forward to getting to know folks from this site!

Hi all. I too was quite active on another lds prep website. My computer, however will no longer allow me to access certain websites, the other site being one of them so I had to get my "fix" somewhere else. I was directed here by a friend, but I do not know his screen name on this site.

Good to be here and glad that it's free!

hi...didn't see this before...so here goes:

I am purelove on another site. I am still young and learning all i can. Until about 2-3 years ago i thought preparedness was a total joke and only the "crazies" were involved. :) well here i am...having become involved in something i always rolled my eyes about. Funny how life works eh? I am still learning how to love the Lord and do what he says (being stubborn is one of my strengths/weaknesses). Im excited to be here!

I was referred here by Kelly Alwood and really like the site so far. My family has been prepping for almost 2 decades now and have learned that there are always things to learn!

After much encouragement from Gayle Weber and Mark Drennen (yes he is related) we are happy to be here and looking for more KNOWLEDGE.

I am a convert to The Church of 38 years, joining in 1972 while living in Southern California where I was born and raised. Served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. Completed 3 college degrees, sent two sons on missions … both of whom returned to marry in The Temple.

My wife and I now live in West Virginia and struggle to maintain relationships with those of you in serious Mormon Country; ergo, this site will serve our needs very well. Maybe we can even contribute something once and awhile.

My wife Shari has an education degree and spent many years giving our tax dollars away as she was employed by the state welfare department … uh … er r … um … let’s see the politically correct name is uh … oh yah – Department of Health and Human Resources! She now spends 100% of her time putting up with me and working on preparedness! I, on the other hand work for a regional insurance carrier and give away private dollars. I am a Regional Property Specialist handling large residential and commercial property losses. I spend way too much time trying to figure out the ignorance around me …?

Hi, my name is Ellen, I am a convert to the church. I grew up in Idaho, where I met my husband. We have three children (12, 5, and 3) and are currently in Kansas, although we are heading back to the Pacific NW this summer. I work in Health Insurance and my husband is a Funeral Director.

I never had much in the way of food storage until we moved to Kansas 2 years ago, and my best friend turned me on to the joys of always having something in the cupboard for dinner.

We have recently begun integrating whole wheat and TVP into our diets, and honestly, I do not think the kids even noticed.

I have been called to be our Ward Food Storage Specialist, so I was searching for assistance (because I have NO IDEA where to begin) and found this site.

Hey all,

Erich here. I've been studying/training in Wilderness Survival for over 10 years now and am also a member (I sound like I'm at some AA meeting). Anyways, since becoming a father and husband not too long ago, I have recently made the shift to practicing and learning more about emergency preparedness skills (such as food storage, gardening etc) since my wife isn't too keen on living in a shelter out in the boonies .

I look forward to learning from all you guys!

HOWDY Y'ALL!!!

I am a Texas-raised Southern Belle who told EVERYONE that I would NEVER END UP IN UTAH (y'all know what happens when you do that...). After living in Texas and spending a couple of years in the San Fransisco Bay Area, I have ended up in Orem, Utah, with my family. However, having endured 5 years in Utah, I have found that I like it quite well (yes, even PRIDEFUL TEXANS can make a life for themselves in Utah). My husband (of almost 16 years) and I enjoy spending as much time as possible with our 2 children (son - 8 years old and daughter - 6 years old)...so much so, that I now homeschool my kids (FUN!). We love to do anything outdoors, play games and work on emergency preparedness together. I have been dehydrating for fun and food storage for years and find it quite the enjoyable addiction!!! I am excited to learn and hopefully share something useful!!!

Hi everyone. I'm Joe. I'm living in South Jersey in the Philadelphia suburbs. I was born and raised in Philadelphia. Being city raised, situational awareness and thinking about security are second nature. However, my lawn was 10' x 10' and I can't tell a weed from grass. I have even heard that there are different types of grass...
I'm new to preparedness. I'm trying to build on my strengths and compensate for my weaknesses. I would especially like to start a backyard garden this year.

I was actually part of another prepper site, and one of the members posted a comment regarding the info on this one. I looked it up, and here I am. Was glad to see Kenneth on here, and felt right at home.

I have had the food storage bug ever since I married my DH, and his mother taught me all about canning/freezing food. The spirit would move upon me from time to time to get more, and due to life happening to us a time or five (or more), how grateful I have been for that food storage. I know it is a blessing from God to be prepared. However, somewhere in my beady brain, I thought when the "hard times" would come right before the second coming, we would hunker down for a few months to a year, live off our food storage, and then ta da! The Savior would come and all would be right with the world. About 8 years ago I went to a Roger K. Young seminar, and also studied the Book of Revelations. For the first time I realized that our "hard times" might be 20+ years, and thats when I really got serious about Emergency preparedness, and learning every new skill I could. I love using my sun oven, and recently bought a rocket stove and can hardly wait to try it out. I am a nurse by profession, but love natural healing choices, and have a yard full of both culinary and medicinal herbs, and work on learning how to use them properly. One hobby that drives my kids crazy, is identifying plants in the wild for food. Never know when this might come in handy. Also, my husband and I "inherited" some bee hives, and now are the proud parents of 3 (hives). Our lot it too small to keep them on, but good friends who love honey and extra pollination are kind enough to keep them for us. My dream is to have a piece of land of our own with enough room for a large garden, fruit trees, chickens, and maybe a cow. However, as time goes on I have just decided to do the best we can where we are for now.

Recently I was called as the Stake Welfare specialist over the Finances, Home Storage, and Health areas of the Self-Reliance wheel. I am feeling rather frustrated as I am only allowed to be a resource to Wards (if they request it) for teaching them how to cook with the basics (grains, beans, dried milk, etc...), How to preserve food, sew, knit, and so on. We are not to even mention Emergency preparedness as it may scare people. So I sit and wait to help. Any advice or help from any of you is greatly appreciated.

I am excited to be a part of this site, and hopeful to learn lots from you all.

Welcome to the site, Comfrey!

Any advice or help from any of you is greatly appreciated.
Refer them to this site for specific things regarding cooking with basics, preserving food, etc. In doing so, they will also get some exposure to other emergency preparedness things.

Hello-
I stumbled onto ldspreppers.com by accident. I have been wandering around search engines trying to find information on my own to prepare my family for any situations outside the normal daily life. I found it much easier to join a forum then to try and research EVERYTHING on my own. It has been a major time saver and the insight is very helpful.

I grew up in the church and always had "1 yr supply" lessons in church. I didn't think it applied to me since I didn't have my own family yet. Then when I got married 8 years ago I mentioned to my in-laws that I needed to get started but didn't think I could afford it. They told me that newlyweds weren't expected to be prepared. A couple years went by... I was told that we were still not expected to be prepared because we were still in school. A couple years later... Again Our income was very small with 1 child. I was told not to worry, when we have more means we could prepare. A couple years went by again i was told... The Lord knows you would be prepared if you could and that's OK.

Well, I finally got sick of not knowing if I could provide for my family if times got tough. I started wondering HOW TO AFFORD IT. I know in my gut that I had put off this for far too long. Our income was greatly affected by the current recession and it gave me a kick in the behind. What if the recession didn't get better. So I started small. 72 hr. kit 1 month pantry storage. Some wheat. I found that as I began to cook meals from scratch my food bill dropped dromatically giving me the much needed funds to build my storage.

Moral of the story... It is a lot easier and cheaper to prepare than to go from day to day. Not to mention uplifting to know that I finally am following council. Thanx ldspreppers.com for helping me understand this important commandment. I look forward to learning more.

Ok, I am here to say Hello. I am new to this site, I found it on facebook and wanted to learn more so here I am. A little bit about me, I am a single mom of seven kids: 6 boys and 1 girl, I am LDS, and I love to learn about Emergency Preparedness, however prepared I am definitely not. The only 72 hour kit that I have made is the one that I gave my mom and dad for their anniversary. I am hoping that I will pick up some good tips here, food storage and all, I want to be prepared but the sheer quantity of stuff required to make sure that I am prepared for my kids is a daunting prospect somedays so I keep learning and hadn't quite figured out where to start, so I decided that I am going to start here and now.

Hello all. I'm located in Houston, and after hurricane Ike blew into town last year, I realized I needed to be more prepared. We were without power for 8 days, had to boil water, and I cooked what I could on the chiminea on the patio. I've been working hard to put myself in better circumstances before the next "disaster" hits.

I'm going to scoot in here and do a quick "hello"! I grew up in the church in western NY. Married my husband in CA when I was 18, he was from Mississippi. He joined the church (I'm one of the lucky ones) a year after we were married and a year after we were separated by his deployments. Traveled for many years with the military and all 7 of my kids were born literally around the world!

We are now settled in NC in no man's land! I've been told by a couple of our Ward members that we aren't even in the Ward boundaries (we are)... and I LOVE it! We have a small dairy goat farm with other various animals.

I write a monthly EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS column for an online newspaper called Homesteader News... if anyone ever has any suggestions for topics.. PLEASE fell free to tell me!

I am hoping I can glean some prep organizational skills from everyone on here! I'm impressed with what I've seen so far!

I don't remember how I found this site. I'm sorry. I've been enjoying it a ton, and just found this page today.. OOPS. I am a stay at home mom of 7 children. We live on a small farmette (1.2 acres) and have a garden, dogs, cats and chickens. I was just called as the Ward Emergency Prep Specialist. I'll tell you I have found this calling to be one that the ward seems to make you fail at, but I will win.. I'm tenacious and I am not a quitter. I have been trying to help many in my ward to prepare for years. I am learning sooo much!! I think I am getting information constipation, but it's ok.. I'm still learning.
Thank you so much for all your help!!!

I was born and raised in the Salt Lake valley, non-LDS. I joined the Army two weeks after High School and traveled the World for 30+ years. I joined the Church about four years ago and moved back to the valley (long story). Due to my HAM license I was appointed Ward Communications Specialist, and became VERY interested in being well rounded prepared. Due to my interest in Emergency Preparedness, I was "awarded" the additional calling of Ward Family Preparedness Specialist. My Fiancee (Karen) and I are in the process of converting a 16' cargo trailer into a CERT/Communications trailer. We are both CERT trained and HAM Radio Operators (KE7MQF & KE7DOG). I also submit a Preparedness page into the Wards monthly Newsletter.

Create a new thread and post some pictures of this conversion when you get a chance. This sounds really interesting!

Welcome, don't let the prospect of preparing overwhelm you, just one can at a time, one extra little bag of beans, one bottle of ketchup, just like precept upon precept, suddenly, it is overflowing everywhere, believe me I know. Buy enough to last of whatever is on sale to last you until it comes on sale again. If you try HE will fill in the gaps.

Hi every one!! I recognize some of you from other prepper sites. It's fun to see common themes and threads that pull us all together. Tribalism and community building are some of the important factors that will help us survive the coming aristocracy.(Oliver DeMille reference there)

I'm still a young man (28 years old). I've worked in preparedness, were I met many of you, and one of my sources of frustration was to see of few of my generation are active in preparedness. I've heard all the same excuses and justifications shared by Karatemom. It's a load of hogwash. My wife and I saved and scrimped and got $600.00 together for our preparedness fund. Then a miracle occurred and a friend, who bulk orders food from Walton Feed Co., called telling us that a previous customer was moving, leaving behind a year supply for 8 adults, still freshly packed. She asked exactly for the amount we'd saved. She had no idea I was saving up or how much I had. The Lord helps the willing and faithful.

So anyway, I'm hoping to glean and share from the 'silver gray' preppers, share, but also connect with other young familys out there who's lives have also been taken over by preparing for the coming crisis.

Anyway, I have 7 children and we plan to have as many as possible before it's illegal. Prepping has become a lifestyle for us, and thats were our extra money goes (when there is extra money). It's moved beyond preparing for crisis to how we live our daily lives. We are eager to learn more, network with others, and hopefully bring something to the table for all.

Thanks for providing this site I have learned a lot, the one person that I would like to thank is Kelly, I have seen a lot of things that I need to learn and he has taught me a lot about being ready for anything that might happen, also I need to give the site thanks for putting up training material that can be used for personal or for others to use I have told others about this site so they can prepare themselves also.

My name is Monica, Preparedness has been a passion of mine for a number of years now. I am a member of the "crazies" ;) I am into natural medicine, I homeschool my 6 younger children (I have 7 in all) we grow a garden, preserve what we grow, we cloth diaper and pretty much love to have a good time. We moved a couple of years ago from our home in the Seattle area to Utah. Our yard came with 4 fruit trees and 2 walnut trees and plenty of space for kids and gardens. There is a feeling of urgency in our family to prepare *every* needful thing. In the past I seemed to be the only one interested in doing this but in the last few months (beginning of Dec '09) my husband also felt the need so we are hip deep in getting everything together. Some have told me that I know a ton of stuff about food storage and preparing but when I look at all that is out there I realize how little I really know. I am a chatty person and love to put in my 2 cents :) but know that I don't intend to offend anyone but sometimes it happens so please except my appology in advance :) I look forward to getting to know this new community of people.

I'm a Tennessee Master Gardener who specializes in growing organic vegetables and small fruits. I have 10 acres in rural Tennessee. I have 10 fifty foot long raised garden beds, one acre of fruit trees, and a bunch of half barrel containers that I grow strawberries in. I start almost all of my plants myself by either direct sowing or by starting transplants in a small greenhouse. Mostly open pollinated heirloom plants.

Along with my husband, I have served as the Ward Preparedness Specialist and also the Communications Specialist, and have taught ham radio licensing classes (tech no code level) as well as organic gardening, though we do not serve in either of those callings at the present time. (We held these callings back when we still lived in a large, urban ward). Our current ward is a small and very rural ward, where they have a hard enough time fulfilling more essential callings, and cannot even address anything like preparedness specialists.

Hi Friends,

I am so happy to have found this site (surfing prepardness), with other like minded people! I live in Oklahoma, my husband and I are raising 5 great kids. I have always worked on food storage and continue too, however I am realizing that there is soooo much more to prepare. Honestly, I feel overwhelmed and a bit intimidated as I am still learning among so many experts (preserving cheese!). I look forward to hearing from you.

I just attended a Prepareness Fair in Highland UT, and one of the founder of this website encouraged me to "introduce" myself. I am primarily a disciple of Jesus Christ, a wife, and a mother. In my spare time, I am a Medical Professional, and a small business owner.

I have served as the "Food Storage Queen" in my ward for 4 years and now author a blog to share information with my ward members and anyone else who would like to read it. You may view it at http://amatterofpreparedness.blogspot.com/.

I look forward to learning for you all.

Jacob,

We're young too, although not as young as you, and have 7 kids. You don't see young big families that much anymore, not even in AZ. We are starting our preps and would love to network. My sister lives in Highland. Don't know how close that is, but we come up occasionally. Love to chat.

Hi all,

I ran across this site while looking for a jelly making recipe on Angela's site: http://www.blogger.com/profile/13564720462613298012. My husband doesn't love all the time I put into it, but puts up with my food storage craziness and does appreciate it. Haven't really done much except a little food storage. In the last year, I have felt that I need to prepare more and have been encouraged along by my parents, who feel a strong drive to be prepared. I look forward to learning a lot and implementing. I'm also happy to share what little I know. Thanks all.

Hi WhitewaterLady!

How much of what you have written has reminded me of my younger self. I live in NC and loved rafting and canoeing. I have done the Nantahala many times as well as the Nolichucky, Gauley in Wva, as well as the Chatooga that is part of the border of SC and GA. It was good to read your post and I hope to hear of your whitewater adventures.

My name is Garnet online. Some will know me as Bohemian Garnet. I'm married, LDS, live on a 40 acre permaculture farm in the Pacific Northwest. Over a year ago, we saw how the economy was going to turn sour. Because of that, there are now three adults living on this farm (my mother). This change is perminant. We personally do not believe the world is going to become an easier place to live. Food, water, fuel are all become huge issues world-wide.

We expect/hope for 28 family members & dear friends if TEOTWAWKI happens, to be living here on our farm. That would be everything from seniors to babes in arms.

We are far better prepared than most. Water is abundant on our farm, we have an orchard, and I raise meat goats, rabbits, chickens, and maybe turkeys this year. Hope to stock our 1/2 acre pond with blue gill and bass as well. We've planted over 12,000 trees on our farm, over the past 5 years, to become our future woodlot. Our home, and indeed our entire lifestyle is being moved more and more toward being totally off grid, and as self sufficient as possible.

My name is Molly online. I am single 52 year old female. I have lots of friends that are seeing the scriptures unfold. My grandmother always felt more secure with a farm even though grandpa would have preferred to live in town. She lost him to cancer in 1931 so she had to help her boys run the farm to make a living. I definitely have her blood. I have moved to property where I can be more self sufficient. Putting into every day practice the necessary activities that will make the most of my time is a real trial. I now realize how being able to stay at home as a mother can be a great advantage when you have to tend to gardens and fermenting things. When I share preparedness tips lately, I am taken much more seriously than in the past. Before, the response was "yea, I'll just come over to your house." Now the response is "I wish I had bought this when it was cheaper." Comunity will be important. I can see how pitching in and helping on the farm was necessary to get everything done.

Found your site awhile back and decided to join. I have been working on self-sufficiency skills since the 70's. I have 12 acres but only garden a small area. I just can not physcially do what I did 30 yrs ago...lol. I can vegetables, fruit, meat and home made soups and sauces. I am a retired Registered Nurse and lost my spouse 6 yrs. ago. I have been inactive in the LDS church for quite awhile mostly due to my crazy work schedule while nursing and just have gotten lazy to attending regularly. I am looking forward to learning here and hope to have some skills to share. It helps to have like minded folks to keep you working on needed skills and stocking up by frequent contact. I am also hoping there might be someone/family in my neck of the woods that might want to buddy up if danger comes. As a widow that is my biggest fear, if I am left alone I should do fair, but I just am not able to defend my home alone.

First off thank you for this site and to all those that have added their knowledge to it.

I found out about this site a while back from a link on another site that dealt with different sides of preparedness and survival, mainly what many would call backwoods style teachings. Anyway, after reading, some more reading, and then reading again… I decided to join.

I live in north central/north western Wisconsin with my wife; no kids yet. We both grew up in this area and our families live near us. I grew up on a small (80 acre/28 head) dairy farm, while she grew up in the “city” that we currently call home. I can’t say I’m an expert at anything, but I have learned a lot from others in my life and I am always learning and sharing new things. Especially at work (Ace Hardware). In the near future I hope to go back to school and get a degree in architecture (loooong road to get there!) and eventually move back to the family farm.

My wife’s and my long term goal is to build a large enough house on the farm to not only hold us (and future children), but other family and friends that may one day need help. And have the farm as a major source of food and resources. I’m not worried about defense and things like that. I’m very well read on that area (plus I served my time in the Army) and have already laid much of the groundwork to protect my friends and family, although it is a never ending battle in itself. Much like anything worthwhile in life.

Honestly I am terrible at describing myself and listing the things I have done in my life often seems like I’m bragging (at least to me…I’m very shy at times…lol) so I guess if anyone wants to know more about me, or anything like that just ask.

I'm one of those people who has always been interested in preparedness but rarely does anything about it. I'm an avid outdoorsman and I play competitive paintball. One of my paintball teammates issued us an invitation to accompany him and his brother (both preppers) to a TV show shoot for Animal Planet, in Idaho. I'd never heard the term "prepper" before. I had a great time helping out and learning more about serious prepping, and consequently found out about this site. It seemed right up my alley and I'm excited to jump in with both feet.

I know what you mean, I have seen it first hand. :P

We're on the path of preparedness which leads to the path of the tree of life. We don't have a semi-trailer to stock, but I'm close to a year's supply. However, we need more w-a-t-e-r. All things prepared... food, water, arms, ammo, nbc and willpower.

I'm from the Central Coast of California, but have been living in Northern Virginia for the past 11 years. Right in the heart of desperado.

Hello LDS Preppers. I am an active member of another LDS prep site, thought I would come over here and check this place out. Born in the church, raised in SoCal, moved to Utah after the wife and I had our 5th child (San Diego is an expensive place to raise a family). Started getting into prepping before moving out here, worked on it more seriously since then. Just trying to be a decent man. I hope to learn and contribute on your prep site.

Was laid off and found a great position in South Carolina and have lived here for 8 years. Just had our 35th wedding anniversary tonight. We are former Provident Living/Communications Specialists and are living off our bounteous garden this summer (cannin', bottlin', dryin' and eat'n.) We are both amateur radio licensed as are the twin boys and enjoy participating in charity walks/bike rides as radio check point operators. I am president of our local amateur radio society. Hope to learn, share and network with other like-minded from this website. You can look up my call sign at qrz.com, K4BSC.

I moved to Southeastern Idaho about 5 weeks ago from Oregon. My wife and I sought to be nearer to her family and I was seeking relief from far left politics like Marijuana Awareness Week, high taxes and still rising and big government. The past 2 years as I have followed the economy and also started wondering more about other types of emergencies of all types, foreign and domestic, natural and unnatural. At first, visiting sites like this seemed a little strange to me...like you don't want anyone in your family or the church to know what you're doing for fear of being seen as "that guy" or "that relative". It is also very difficult for me to keep this politically neutral. It's difficult b/c I believe a big part of why I am on this site is b/c of really bad politics on both sides. Hopefully I'm not censored by the moderators.

The thing I fear most is total economic collapse, and the extreme dificulties/challenges it would bring. Two years ago you would have been laughed to scorn for even saying total collapse outloud. Now, you have major commentators on news, talk, major print media and even striking comments from our own Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke pointing to that exact possibility.

So, I am here to seek more knowledge and understanding about what preparedness is. I have so much to learn and really won't be able to contribute anything other than a friendly reply to someone else's post. My wife and I are waiting to move into our new home on an acre. I have only the very basics of preparedness/survival. That includes a basic food storage, some silver rounds, a gun, some ammo, and some camping supplies.

Hi. My name is Dawn and I live in North Florida. One thing I hate is to have to ask any one for help with anything. I am 50 plus and I'm trying to get me and my 71 yo mom prepared. Currently I am trying to get a house of some kind built on my little happy acre that I bought. I stumbled upon this site from a facebook site "Self Sufficient if Ye are prepared....." I just like to see what is out there and try not to panic cuz I am probably living in the wrong part of the country and I can't get things done fast enough. I want to do it all NOW, but I have come along way just turtling along. Maybe I just need encouragement. Most people (my family) thing I have gone off the deep end.

Just know you have not gone off the deep end. You will be the grasshopper rather than the ant with nothing. I understand about turtling along, I have you beat in the age department and have developed body parts that have been rebuilt and still don't work very well, but even with limitations, you can turtle it done. You are not alone and this is a great site to spur you and provide tons of informative help. I teach preparedness at church plus work lots but I still keep ploding along trying to get prepared even if it is just one more bottle of ketchup at a time. From one turtle to another, Maroonlady

hi, im new..and a member of the church all my life, and im not prepared...at all. basic food storage, about maybe a months worth? its been hard, hubby was unemployed a year, and hes a convert, getting him to understand the importance of BEING prepared has been a hard struggle.

i think im wearing on him tho, and it comes from a notation i found on Glen becks channel...where he was discussing NEW WORLD ORDER and a GLOBAL GOVERNMENT (i havnt been into any threads yet, so if you dont subscribe to this theory, please forgive me).

iv known and heard about the NWO for many years now, and ive told people it was coming, anyway, the other day, glen was talking about it and said...
the government..OUR government has a group that runs statistics of trends...and had just put out an official document (available to read on glen becks web page) about a WORLD GOVERNMENT thats going to becoming into its own as a domination force in roughly..15 years..

so, we, my family, has to START to do what the rest of the members HAVE BEEN doing, and thats getting it all ready and done so when it all falls apart, we have sustainable living during it.
not to mention, its a commandment as well...

so, here i am, i found you through facebook, i run a facebook ward page for my ward, and i do searches on "LDS"m "MORMON" , etc..and this site came up as a hit, i linked it to the ward web page, and joined.

Greetings! I live in the Kansas City metro area (moved here 12/08) and was given a link to this site by an online friend who is very preparedness-oriented. I am a Primary teacher, and am currently without a music calling for the first time in my 29+ years of Church membership. When we lived in Iowa we were ready for anything, but since we moved to KC we have chosen to pull back on our preparations and get out of debt. I'm hoping that I can find here some ideas for accomplishing both tasks.

Looking forward to diving in reading, and trying out some new things!

Hello out there,
OKAY... My name is Seth. I am a Father of 2 (soon to be 3) Girls and husband to a beautiful and Understanding wife. I work a few jobs as a Firefighter, Paramedic, Medical Technician, and Correctional Officer. I grew up with a Father who had been bitten by the Emergency Preparedness bug, and who knew that it would be an inherited disease. My wife works as a Nurse in the NICU. I also teach CPR and First aid on the side. I was recently called to be the Ward Emergency Specialist in Pleasant Grove, Utah. I saw this coming due to my Dad, Brother, and 3 out of 4 Sisters having the Same calling.

I'm excited to be involved in this great work.
Hope to make some new friends, share some stuff and LEARN new stuff on here.

Bigredtroum here. We are out in Nebraska and working on our preparedness. I have always been the "Plan for the worst, hope for the best" kind of person. We are steadily improving through learning new skills and applying them. We have been learning a lot the last couple of years about gardening and home preservation. Our long term goal is not only to be prepared for what comes but also to be self sufficient, by growing the majority if not all that we need to live. We have a long, exciting journey ahead of us.

Hi all. I am new to the site. I see there is a lot of interesting stuff.

I am Jeff. I am am originally from Albuquerque/Los Lunas, New Mexico. I was born and raised in NM. I was a Security Officer, volunteer fire fighter-EMT-FR in Los Lunas for about 22 years. I was married for a couple of years and have 3 boys. My first wife died in a car accident in February 1998. I moved to Utah in July 2006 and continued to work as a Security Officer. I am currently an Amateur Radio Operator here in Salt Lake City. I got remarried in June of 2009 and gained a daughter. I now have 4 boys and 1 girl. I am currently in the process of moving to Idaho Falls.
My wife told the bishop in the ward we are moving into that I am a HAM radio operator. I have a feeling that I might get a calling for preparedness.

I have aco-worker that told me about this site and I am interested in learning more from others.

Hi - Another newbie checking in :)

I recently moved from San Diego to Murrieta and promptly got called as the Assistant Emergency Preparedness Specialist. My husband and I have ham radio licenses, but haven't used them much. My husband did get to use his during the last bad San Diego fires. We have a little food storage, but need to do much better with the whole preparedness thing. I'm sure that's why I was called to the position I was.

I'm looking forward to learning from others here and bringing that knowledge back to my ward!

Hello Everyone. I am a suburban homesteader on almost 2 acres in Texas. Hoping when the huband retires to move to more acreage someone north of here (looking into Arkansas, Oregon, or Missouri) and homestead full-time.

I have aquired some skills over the years (gardening, keeping chickens, home canning and preserving), but I have a long way to go yet - especially when it comes to long term food storage and survival type skills.

Really looking forward to coming here and participating.

Well, let's see. I don't consider myself a survivalist even though I do match the definition. And I wouldn't normally call myself a prepper, but those seem to be the circle I find myself in.

I work as a Paramedic/Firefighter. I've been on the job for about 9 years now and through the job I've become acutely aware of the disasters that strike every day. I'm not talking about TEOTWAWKI, but the house fire and the flooded basement that render our long term food stores of no worth. It always gives me something to think about. I focus my work on the Special Operations of the department. I work as a Haz Mat Tech on Idaho's RRT 7. The list goes on to include building collapse, trench, high angle and confined space rescue.

I actually found this forum while following up on some points from another forum I belong to. I'm glad I've found a sounding board for a few ideas I have and hope to provide the same.

Greetings from north Texas.

A little about myself,
I am a truck driver in the panhandle of Texas hauling milk. I live in a small town and have been putting stuff away a little at a time. I'm always interested in learning more about being prepared. Looking forward to the comradeship in this forum.

Hi All,
I've been prepping ever since I've been on my own. I guess it started during the Cuban Missile Crisis when in AZ my Mom stored extra canned goods in the hallway pantry..of course it could have been that my Dad was a farmer at heart and was used to canning and having canned goods stored, but in AZ we didn't have a garden big enough to can...since then I've been and still married, 31 years, and the family started gardening and canning what we grew, plus it is just something I picked up..anyways been doing it for 31+ years and still not completely prepped, but am better off than most in Columbus OH. Both my grown children prep and it is something that we discuss a lot, and I got a few co-workers prepping and some neighbors......about me I bicycle, metal detect, used to hunt, trap, camp, hike, canoe, and enjoy the outdoors.

I *Thought* I had introduced myself last week, maybe I was too tired and mentally wrote a post, and then never followed through ???

I am a Homeschooling, Home healing, Home birthing momma to 6. I grew up in Ut, moved to Alaska, and migrated to Missouri.

I am currently studying for my Certified Professional Midwifery License. My Hubby is a Pilot in Bush Alaska, and we bought 10 acres 4 years ago. We have had dairy cows, Dairy goats, chickens, dogs and other various critters since determining to become self reliant.

In this quest I have established a goal to be knowledgeable, and experienced

HOWEVER I think we do a Serious disservice when we try to maintain completely self reliant techinques. I have found we become Jack of All-trades, but master of None. I think its in our best interest to encourage cooperation and this leads me to my next issue: Not many are willing to do for others as they would have others do for them.... sad but true, many of us are willing to jump in for the short-haul, but bail after we get our fingers stepped on, or become offended that we feel we are working harder then the next bloke.

How is that for an intro?

I love natural healing, I feel like its God's grace and gift to us that the Earth will heal most every ailment we encounter. I desire to become aware of and know how to use as much natural healing as possible, that includes emotional healing, spiritual healing and physical healing.
We have a years supply of the basics, and are working towards having a complete Storehouse in our home. Including seeds, First aid , Clothes, ammunition.... and KNOWLEDGE

Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

I found this site through the LDS Preppers Facebook page (don't remember how I found the page).
Food storage and preparedness are things I have worked on for years and although I haven't had any natural disasters the preparedness helped me through a divorce.
Just being prepared as much as possible is comforting.
I am a garden coach and landscape consultant. I love growing my own food and herbs and teaching others to do the same. I enjoy learning about and growing more unusual edible plants also and grow several types in my yard.
The house I grew up in was in Colorado on one acre with a large garden and chickens. Currently I live on 1/3 acre but would love to have more land eventually.

Hi all.

I can't remember how I found this site. I do so much internet research that it probably just popped up when I was looking for something else.

The reason it caught my eye is because a) I'm a prepper and b) I am on the edge of conversion to LDS.

I have the card in front of me, Sister Lewis and Sister Jones, when I feel the moment is right, I'll call them and invite them to my house. My wife is a bit skeptical but I have been feeling a presence lately, for lack of a better term, pushing me in this direction. Coming from an atheist turned agnostic and now whatever you would call me, that's quite the statement.

I've been a prepper since 2008 after I lost a job due to an injury at work. A few lawsuits later and that was resolved, but it was ugly and we didn't have income for 15 months except my 401K. I'm glad that all happened, because it really opened my eyes to the world of finance and family security. We now have a rather large savings, the largest since my wife and I were married 13 years ago. We make less, but have more oddly enough. Both in our marriage and in financial security.

We've been frequenting the local cannery here in Colorado Springs. The couple there watching over it are amazing, and have come to know my family and have shown great kindness to my kids. In fact, they may well be responsible for my choice of outlet for my new found faith.

We unfortunately live in an apartment since we lost our house in that 15 months, but we have at least 6 months of food for a family of 5 and our dog. I have always loved guns, but now have enough ammo to last three decades or more of daily use, I'd imagine. We have tools, tents, and devices galore that are geared toward surviving any event we can think of. I've built a large library of books about knowledge that might be required in a society that has collapsed.

All that said, I'm not expecting collapse. I'm expecting another depression. For that reason, now that I feel pretty prepped otherwise, I've turned with vigor toward the financial end of prepping. I invest in stocks, precious metals, and eventually I will invest in real estate. I guess you could say I work from home in that sense, as I am a housedad and my wife is an RN.

I came here more to learn about Mormonism than about prepping, I run my own site for prepping and am a moderator on APN. But I expect this site to hold my interest. I have a lot of research under my belt, and if you all don't mind I'd be glad to share with you what I think I have figured out regarding prepping. I tend to post about financial issues as well, in fact I am the moderator for the financial section at APN as well as the state of Colorado.

Thanks for letting me hop on.

Hmm. I thought that I had posted here, but evidently not.

I am a convert of 35 years, and I have been working on food storage most of that time. My preps have saved us many times, only one of which was a natural disaster. I hope to learn and share with others who are walking the same paths.

Peggyree, just chuckling here as I read your plan for keeping your adult kids from bouncing back and staying independent! I'm new to this forum and have not figured out how to post so wasn't going to --but your comment got me laughing and engaged.
I'm a mother to 6 who've all launched, and a grandmother to 7, and the one in my family who bought the preparedness supplies and lugged them down to the basement while my apathetic former husband watched sports upstairs on Direct TV ...
Dreading the thought of having to navigate the last days by myself has impelled me to be more determined to know more.
I'm NOT Technically or gadget-y gifted (I can't even remember how to load & shoot my gun and I've taken the concealed weapons course twice!) but I am motivated and a believer that when we are prepared "we shall not fear".
I'm going to listen to Roger K Young and Ken Mouravac and all the greats I've been hearing about next weekend at UVU at my first SUPER PREPAREDNESS CONFERENCE ever-- June 9 & 10 --and I'm excited. I'll be one of the vendors...showing a way even non-mechanical folks like me can grow food indoors without failures. Hope to meet some of you there!

Newbie, just found this thread so will introduce myself.
I live in a city in north central IL.
Am LDS with calling of preparedness/food storage specailist.
Have been working on my food storage for ages. Think I am ready for what may lie ahead, tho worry about fire & flooding.
Since I am single with one grown son, dragging 25-50# bags of bulk food downstairs is a chore. I am glad my son is supportive & helpful even tho he is inactive.
Currently my biggest project is redoing my 72 hr kit.
Hello to all.
I hope to share what I know & leard a lot.

Hello fellow members. I'm very involved in helping members to get their Basic Amateur Radio Certification here in Canada through my web page " ldsradio.ca ". Lots of good stuff there for "anyone" on either side of the 49th parallel. Some material on general emergency preparedness. Lots of fun. Plenty of information about antennas to build for emergency communications. I have been involved in electricity since back when, as a five year old boy, I repaired the cord on my mother's ancient Electrolux vacuum cleaner. Then I studied electronics when I got a lot older, around 11 or 12, and got my business license to fix radios, stereos, that sort of thing, when 14. Eventually I went to college and took electronics and communications and actually became certified and worked for the local telephone company for 35 years. It has been both fun and challenging. I was in radio and microwave for a few years up north. The challenge there is in not freezing to death in the winter and then playing chicken with logging trucks the rest of the time. Later I worked in engineering. I retired in 2000 and that was a smart move. Lots of volunteer service in the community using mostly VHF mobile and hand held radios and then of course lots of callings - recently emergency prep specialist and stake communications specialist. Still cutting my teeth on those, plenty to learn and not much instruction, no manuals. All the best to everyone doing similar things.

I just became the emergency preparedness specialist for my ward and found this site while I was looking for a "Job description". I think this site will be the go to place for everything I will need. I love the idea of being prepared and self-sufficient so this calling will help me to actually become these things. My dad is a serious prepper and has started us off very well with some awesome Christmas presents (sun oven and a Berkey). My family and I live in a condo and have very limited space, so we will be getting creative with how we go about preparing.

The most important thing is: If we become spiritually worthy to greet Jesus Christ when He comes again, first we must survive to be there -- so temporal preparation is required.

As to my background: Married 41 yrs, 2 kids, 3 grandkids. Grew up poor but didn’t know it, got scholarships to go to college. Have a couple degrees in journalism. Retired from U.S. Gov’t, worked in PR for BLM, OSM and VA, agencies without security clearances that help environment or vets. Am part Seneca Indian, do some traditional things, earned a name, and have a Sioux feather. Read about 4-5 books/week.

Served in a couple bishoprics, etc. LDS Scout leader about 20 years, couple dozen Eagle Scouts so far. Probably have spent 3+ years sleeping outdoors, most recently last weekend at a lake. Outdoors type, I'm told: camping, kayaking, hunting, fishing, bumming around in the boonies. Moved to Alaska in early 70s, got a pilot's license and a plane, and learned about survival kits. Have had survival kits in planes, homes, and vehicles ever since; teach others to make them, most recently at Relief Society evening meeting 10 days ago.

Live at an airport with a hangar full of unfinished flying machines. Built and licensed 3 Experimental aircraft (2 airplanes, 1 gyrocopter). I can build just about anything from scratch. Have a website on building a teardrop trailer called "crocodiletear.com”. CERT trained, HAM license, building a new website called "DisasterGuy.com", based on prepper ideas that I have tested myself. A buddy says I have been everywhere and done everything. Not true, but I'm sure trying.

My wife is Chinese, born in China – whose family fled to Hong Kong after Red Chinese came. She emigrated to U.S., went to college, met me, and believes in prepping because her family abandoned everything and had to start over – twice. She is now an RN who supervises an ICU.

I have to add that after spending 3 years studying Isaiah, I’m convinced he knew what would occur in the latter days – which I define as from the start of the 19th Century until the 2nd Coming. But the “latter days” is a time period, not a timetable. Eventually it will be too late to prepare, and we won’t be sitting in cushy homes playing games on the Internet. So, I’m on this website to learn, to go DO IT and see if it works, and come back to learn more. Willing to help anyone on the forum--just PM me.

P.S. Learned about this site from the stake preparedness coordinator, who asked me about preparedness sites to check.

I already recognize names on this site. So, I already feel at home. I love doing preparedness & am anxious to learn as much as I can. I was born into the Church & did not become active until after I had been married 11 years. I had at that time 4 children. I had 7 children. 7 years ago I lost a 36 yr. old son. I have several Grandchildren & several Great grand children. I have been married 55 1/2 years to the same man. My son-in-law told me about this site. I live in a town of 156 people. I lived in Salt Lake for over 60 yrs. before moving here to Idaho. That was 11 1/2 yrs. ago that we moved here. If I go North I live 17 miles from a red light. If I go South it takes 1 1/2 hours to come to the 1st red light. Going West it takes over 1 hour to come to a red light. Going East I don't know how long. I live a little over 50 miles to a Temple. People do not lock their homes or car doors. Everyone waves as you pass them in your car. Just for the record, I do lock my home & car doors. I was brainwashed in S.L. This day & age it is scary not to lock up. My latest preparedness has been pressure canning beans. I know I will learn much from this site. Bluebird

Hello to all! I'm new to this community, but not completely to prepping.

DH and I have been working on our prepping project for about six months now. We have two dogs, which we consider 'service' dogs, but they were never formally trained. DH is disabled, we've had both of them since they were puppies and they just instinctively know when he needs help and can either help him (when I'm at work) or get me it I'm home. I work midnights and sleep in the afternoon when he's awake, so they know that if they come and wake me, if DH needs help with something. DH is a 'dog whisperer' or 'pet psychic' or whatever people call hearing animals talk (no, not CRAZY!) and has trained the dogs well. I'm in the process of learning the skill, it's not something that I was born with (as he was), but I'm learning. Along with our two dogs we have three cats who also help DH, mostly by comforting him or telling him that he needs to get me to help him.

Anyway ... I work full-time and DH is on disability. We don't have a lot of extra income to prep with, but with using coupons to save money, I've been able to put the money saved toward prepping items.

I'm mainly prepping for three things:

1) An extended power outage. I live in an area that normally sees up to 200+ inches of snow a year and it's not uncommon for us to have below teens for temperatures for months on end. Last February we lost power for 36 hours and we were unprepared. We had three oil lamps, a few glade candles and two flashlights (along with the the oil for the lamps, matches for them and the candles and batteries for the flashlights.) Nothing to use as an alternate heat source, we have natural gas, so lost heat when the power was out. And no way to cook, short of roasting hot dogs over either the candles or oil lamps. We ate pb&j and snuggled with the pet under covers and survived. Next time we loose power in the winter, we are prepared, sort of. We have a coleman stove to cook over (will use the attached garage, so as not to kill ourselves) and we have an indoor propane heater. We also have a lot of food that is ready to eat. A good amount of protein, not just canned fruit and veggies.

2) Unemployment. I live in Michigan and in one of the counties that has the highest
unemployment in the county. I've learned that NO job is secure and even though I work for the largest employer in the county, I'm not optimistic that my job will be here in a few years.

3) An EMP. For some reason, this one feels more real to me than the previous two, even though I really think this one is less likely. I think it's b/c I'd assume it was a power outage until I realized my cell phone didn't work and the truck wouldn't start. This is the one I also worry about most too. Mostly b/c this is the one that would leave us the most vulnerable. I have been thinking about this one a lot and have a few thoughts about it. I hope that if we have to have one hit us, that it is during the winter. I know that sounds a bit crazy, but hear me out. If it hits during the winter, we will still be able to use the garage and an attached porch for a freezer and refrigerator while we learn to live w/o them as spring comes. Plus we wouldn't loose everything in them all at once, we'd be able to eat it at a manageable rate. Winter (here at least) would slow down the looters b/c they'd freeze to death first. By the time that spring would come around the prepared would still be around and the non-prepared would have been either helped or if they were hostile, taken care of.

If you haven't realized yet, I like to 'talk' once I get going sometimes it's hard to shut me up. Especially about my thoughts on EMPs.

Anyway ...

Hello to all, thank you for letting me join and learn from all of you!

Call me Carl. Found the site reading about preppers. Hum, red line, does that mean you are not in Websters yet? Just looking for new thoughts and ideas. Meanwhile just waiting for the economic collapse so I can say "told you so." Plus then all the children will return to the homestead and bring the grandchildren with them. See the silver lining in my cloud? Not much to say about myself. Never actually started prepping was born that way. been homesteading since 1954 and starting to get the hang of it. no other skills to speak of except maybe the couple I picked during the break serving as an Army Ranger and Green Beret. At least no one has been shooting at me lately. Currently spending a couple of years doing something with the wife that most of the guys to at nineteen. Be back at the homestead next year. Would say more but must remember OPSEC.

I'm a stay-at-home mom of four in the southern US. My husband is an educator. Last year I built up a two-year supply of food storage for our family. Shortly thereafter, I was called as RS Preparedness Specialist. (Isn't that how it goes?)

My immediate interest is sniffing around for ideas to help develop a monthly preparedness newsletter for our ward. Topics ranging form gardening, canning, home maintenance, finances, 72 hour kits, the cannery, etc.

Right now we're investigating a 5-acre property and hundred year old falling down house. One of my husband's hobbies is building and renovating. And I'm looking for space for a cow and chickens so the neighbors won't mind (right now we just have rabbits.) Soon we'll be able to decide whether to make an offer. We're also fans of John Seymour.

I stumbled across this website but am looking forward to sticking around, learning more, and hopefully contributing in whatever knowledge I can share.
Thanks!

Hi I'm Kelly, I found LDS Preppers on Facebook, I am LDS and my family discovered the importance of being prepared when I was about 3 years old and the city police commandeered my families apartment all day. (for their sniper since behind our apartment there was a hostage situation) My mom basically grabbed my infant brother's ill prepared diaper bag and an umbrella stroller. (This was like 1979/1980). Since then our family has grown up but we all still have a passion for self reliance and have started working on a larger group prepping format that includes all of our extended families the group keeps expanding and we are at about 15 people. My mom is the ward welfare specialist (minus employment) and wrote the wards emergency plan (with help from a family friend and former city emergency coordinator). We are always looking for new things/ ideas. It's kinda like CE's for preparedness, your never really done learning- and it's always good to review. When people tell us that we are the most prepared people they know first I laugh then I cry. I feel like there is still so much we need to do and what are they waiting for? Recently most of our family got HAM licensed.

Hello everyone, young husband from Utah with first child on the way. I grew up a prepper and saw how being prepared just makes your life easier so I have carried it on since growing up and moving out. I am an outdoorsman, love camping, hiking, mtn biking, rock climbing, and am a budding gun enthusiast. I would like to have a homestead someday (need a real job first) and I enjoy learning about different ideas for prepping.

Hi, my name is Victoria and I have always known that we should be prepared. But only until the last couple years have I been trying to prepare. As for the Church, I am new, only about 9 months. I really like the people and the church. As for preparing, the hair on my neck stands up, and I so wish that I had started many many years ago. Over a year ago I moved to Spokane Valley, WA - but it's still to much city. Would love to find some Survivalist type communities (OUT side of Spokane city limits). But after a really bad injury 6 yrs ago, I don't make the money I used to. So everything is slow.

When you prepare the normal stuff (Food, water, seeds, guns/ammo, animals & their food- if possible) remember the basic's. Shampoo, toothpaste, medical, facecreams, towlet paper, spounges, ect. Also remember you will want thing for cooking -to make things taste better and to change up the routine. Like (extracts, spices, herbs, desert mixes, ect). For adults and kids, you will need all types of learning books (no just schooling, but useful books that will help you survive). Then to change the pace for everyone to have fun, you will need (fun books, games, paper, pens/pencils/colors). Everything you use daily, you will need- until you can make it yourself, or find supplements.

If anything happens, it will be a very quick learning time for most of us. So whatever you can't learn before hand, you will need either someone around who knows and can teach you, or a book you can read - & try and learn yourself.

There is just so much.... But I try to get a little of something every mo when I get paid. But I am making a dent, but it still feels like I just don't have enough.!. And especially not having a place outside the city to live. - If anyone in the Northern part of WA or ID has a large farm, and has a small house that they want to rent - Please let me know. (Single 57 lady, no kids, 1 cat totally trained). Was in 4H as a kid and raised animals. So know a little about farm animals.

Thanks so much - have a Great Day. Remember, preparing will only help you whenever something hard comes around. No matter what it is. Be safe.

Hi, my name is Victoria. As for the LDS church, I am new and have been going for about 10 months now. I really like the people and the church. As for preparing - I have always known that we should "All" be preparing for something. Whether it be for (bad times, natural disasters, or economical problems). I just somehow know this and feel it in my bones. Although I was injured about 6 years ago and everything changed, I still try and prepare a little every month even on a low income.

I know that everyones feels differently about "why" they are trying to prepare. But anything can happen. For me this is just So true. I have a feeling that something is coming, and it's sooner than I want. It actually makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. So I really wish that I had started preparing many years ago when I was younger - and that I had bought a farm I had always wanted. But I didn't. But I did move to the Spokane Valley, WA area (still to much city for me). But I am closer to the area's that I want to look at for property. If there are any Survivalist type communities (Out-side of Spokane city limits, more like in the Northern parts of WA or ID), I would love to be contacted about them. Or if you know of anyone who has a farm - that has a Cabin or a small House for rent, Please let me know. I Really would like to be around other survivalists/preparers. I would so love to hear from you, via email: husbandsvic-at-yahoo-dot-com.

Also -remember when you prepare (like the normal stuff: Food, water, seeds, guns/ammo, animals & their food) remember the basic's. Shampoo, toothpaste, medical, facecreams, towlet paper, spounges, cloths-pins, ect. When stocking your food and cooking things, remember you will need things to help change it up. Like having extra: extracts, spices, herbs, desert mixes, ect. Or dead time (for adults and kids), having different types of books (including how to books), paints, pens/pencils, paper, games, ect. Don't forget your daily needs like: medicine, vitamins, face-cream, tooth paste, dish & body soap, towlet paper, plastic bags, socks/undies, shoes, ect). I look at preparing - as trying to make sure that I have anything - that may not be available to me that I might need. Or at least supply me until I can either make it myself or figure out a supplement for it.

If anything happens, it will be a very quick learning time for most of us. So whatever you can't learn before hand, you will need either someone around who knows it and can teach you. Or a book you can read - & try and learn yourself.

There is just so much.... So I try every month -to get a little of something I need, or stock up on more of what I already have. Depending on what's on sale, and price. Even though I am constantly making a dent, it always feels like I still do not have enough. My list is so long. I just have to keep bitting bits off.

The same goes for trying to find a place outside the city to live. I am always looking. Would love to Rent to own, or trade a Travel Trailer as a down on at least 1 acre with a small house or cabin. Or just to move out of the city and rent a place. So again, if anyone in the Northern part of WA or ID has a large farm, and has a small house/cabin that they want to rent at the edge of their property - Please let me know. (I am a Single 57 lady, no kids, 1 cat totally trained, do not drink/smoke). I know a little about farm animals, since I raised and showed some as a kid and was in 4-H. Email: husbandsvic-at-yahoo-dot-com.

Thanks so much - have a Great Day. Remember preparing will only help you, whenever something hard comes around. No matter what it is. Be safe.

Greetings.

I'm not LDS but I am interested in prepping better. Thanks for the welcome.

Nor am I LDS. I have attended some seminars run by LDS preparedness folks and I learned a lot. I have some things to share and hope to learn a lot here.

I been concerned about preparedness for some time and recently heard about a TV show called "Preppers." I googled the term and discovered this website.

I am looking forward to discovering ideas shared by other members that may help me in my goals. I have somewhat prepared but I have a long way to go before I can begin to feel comfortable.

I am married and I work two jobs and my wife is a stay-at-home mom who homeschools our five children. i don't have alot of free time and I am looking for the most efficient and inexpensive ways to get prepared.

Hi All,

My name is Rock. I live in the upstate area of South Carolina. I am a former police officer, soldier, sailor, and tattoo artist among other things. Currently I work for myself as a graphic artist, web site designer, and caricaturist (http://kowulz.com).

I am the national coordinator for Mensa's Emergency Preparedness Special Interest Group, Preparation M: The Preparedness SIG (http://PreparationM.com). We also have a forum that is open to anyone who can intelligently contribute, Preparation M Forum (http://PreparationMForum.com).

I have always had a "be prepared" mindset and had a bug out bag and trunk kit before I knew what they were called. I see a lot of trauma and disorganization ahead for our nation and want to be as prepared as possible for long and short term man-made and natural disasters and help others learn to be.

The Saints have a long history of persecution and preparedness and are considered to be some of the best experts by a lot of preppers. I hope I can both learn and contribute here.

Thanks for having me.

Hello my name is Mark. I currently live in the Boise Idaho area. Although I would not mind getting a job in the Salt Lake City area. Like all here I am new to prepping. I started a few months ago. Its kind of slow going with out employment but I am working on it. I have a lot to learn for prepping like proper food storage and storing tap water is a big issue. I do have interest in the ham radio thing to keep comma going. My father started talking to me about this before he passed and so I have picked up the torch so to speak. I'm looking forward to learning and hopefully be able ro pass on knowledge as well. I guess that's it for the moment and I also welcome meeting new prepper.

I live in Queen Creek AZ with my wife and 3 kids. Growing up I have been around prepping my whole life, my parents had gardens and did a lot of canning. Unfortunately I did not pay attention and did not learn these skills from them. So one day I was sitting in my chair and watching the walking dead and watching them struggle just for food and water made me think, wow we are not prepared for any type of disasters. So I started reading and learning everything I can. So I will probably ask a lot of questions as I jump in and get myself prepared!
